Core considerations for mask selection in the coal industry: Fangdun takes the first step in ensuring the health of miners

May,31,2026 << Return list

During the process of coal mining and processing, a large amount of harmful particles such as coal dust and rock dust are generated, and long-term inhalation will seriously threaten the respiratory health of miners. Choosing a qualified protective mask for miners is a key step in ensuring their occupational health. When selecting products, it is important to focus on the following five aspects:

1Protection level and filtration efficiency

The dust in the coal working environment is mainly composed of coal dust and silica dust, which belong to non oily particulate matter. According to the national standard GB 2626-2019, masks with KN95 level or above should be selected, and their filtration efficiency should not be less than 95%. For areas with high concentration of dust or high exposure positions, KN100 level filtration efficiency of over 99.97% can be considered. When selecting products, it is necessary to check the product execution standards and testing reports to ensure that the filtration efficiency meets the actual operating environment requirements.

2Tightness and facial adaptation

The protective effect of Fangdun masks is highly dependent on the tightness of the face. Most frontline workers in the coal industry are male, with significant differences in facial contours. When selecting products, priority should be given to choosing foldable masks with a three-dimensional cup-shaped structure or adjustable nose clips to ensure a tight fit between the nose bridge, cheeks, jaw, and other areas. It is recommended to choose the head mounted type instead of the ear hanging type, as the latter is prone to loosening and falling off during long-term high-intensity operations. Before bulk procurement, workers with different facial shapes should be organized to conduct actual fitting tests.

3Respiratory resistance and comfort

Coal mining operations require significant physical exertion, leading to a significant increase in respiratory rate and ventilation volume. The higher the filtration efficiency of a mask, the greater the respiratory resistance. The selection of products should strike a balance between protective effect and wearing comfort: the inhalation resistance should not exceed 250Pa, and the exhalation resistance should not exceed 150Pa. Masks with exhalation valves can be preferred to reduce the accumulation of moisture and heat, lower the burden of wearing, and improve worker compliance.

4Special environmental adaptability

The underground environment is humid and hot, and the mask material needs to have certain moisture resistance and durability. It is advisable to avoid using products with a filter layer that fails when exposed to water. At the same time, there are flammable gases such as gas underground in coal mines. All components of masks (including nose clips, headbands, and exhalation valves) must be made of anti-static materials, and the use of exposed metal parts is strictly prohibited to prevent sparks caused by friction and safety accidents.

5Compliance certification and identification verification

When selecting products, it is necessary to verify the complete labeling on the mask packaging or product body: product name, model, implementation standard number (GB 2626-2019), filtration efficiency level, manufacturer name, production date, and expiration date. Prioritize products that have passed national labor safety certification and request third-party testing reports. It is strictly prohibited to purchase "three no" products without identification, standard number, and production information.

Fangdun masks are the first line of defense for occupational health protection in the coal industry. Only by comprehensively evaluating filtration efficiency, sealing, respiratory comfort, environmental adaptability, and compliance certification can we truly provide safe, effective, and reliable respiratory protection for miners.
