Toxic gas or dust? Fangdun takes you to avoid the misconceptions of respiratory protection in the petrochemical industry

Jul,29,2026 << Return list

The working conditions in the petrochemical production process are complex, accompanied by high temperature and pressure, flammable and explosive materials throughout the year, as well as the production of dust, acidic droplets, and various toxic gases. Proper personal respiratory protection is an important safety measure, and everyone must match corresponding equipment according to the hazards on site. Do not use a single mask to handle all scenarios.

Prioritize conducting on-site risk assessments before starting homework, distinguishing between two types of hazards: particulate matter and gaseous toxins

Dust/oil mist protection only includes dry particulate matter such as coal dust and silica dust, and KN series protective masks that comply with GB 2626 standards should be used; There are oily particles such as coke oven smoke and diesel exhaust on site, and KP series filter materials need to be replaced. Note that a simple dust mask cannot effectively block gaseous toxic substances such as hydrogen sulfide and hydrogen cyanide.

For positions that produce organic, acidic, ammonia, and other vapors for toxic gas protection, corresponding models of filter boxes should be used with filter type gas masks.

The selection of protection classification is based on the relevant specifications of individual protective equipment: half face masks can be used if the concentration of toxic substances exceeds 10 times the standard; It is recommended to use a full face mask to protect both the respiratory tract and facial skin within 100 times of exceeding the standard.

The fit of the face mask directly affects the protective effect, and the gap will significantly reduce the protective effect. Prioritize the use of high elasticity soft silicone and ergonomic face masks; It is recommended to use a style with an exhalation valve for long-term high-intensity work, which can timely discharge the humid and hot air inside the mask, making it more comfortable to wear. Only then will people be willing to wear it in a standardized manner throughout the entire process, protect their lung health for a long time, and work with peace of mind to support their families.
