Fangdun Mask Reminder: Key Precautions for Respiratory Protection in Coal Mine Operations

Mar,30,2026 << Return list

The underground environment of coal mines is complex, and dust, gas, and harmful gases are the three major killers that threaten the lives and health of miners. Among them, coal dust will not only cause irreversible occupational injury such as pneumoconiosis, but also may cause explosion at a specific concentration. Therefore, the scientific and standardized use of respiratory protective equipment is the last line of defense and a crucial link in ensuring the safety of miners.

Firstly, the selection must match the work environment. In conventional mining faces, the main hazard is coal dust. Efficient dust masks that meet national standards should be selected, with a filtration efficiency of KN95 or higher, to effectively block fine dust from entering the lungs. If entering gas accumulation areas, fire disaster areas, or conducting blasting operations, ordinary dust masks cannot meet the demand and must be immediately replaced with isolated self rescue devices or positive pressure air respirators. Remember, filter type gas masks are strictly prohibited from being used in oxygen deficient environments, otherwise it may lead to suffocation accidents.

Secondly, the tightness of the wear is a prerequisite for effective protection. Even the most advanced respirator, if not worn tightly, is equivalent to no protection. Before wearing, it is necessary to conduct an air tightness check: for half face masks, use your hands to block the air inlet and inhale, and feel if the mask collapses and fits the face; For full face masks or self rescue devices, it is necessary to ensure that the headband is moderately elastic, the sealing gasket at the nose bridge is tightly pressed, and facial hair such as beard can damage the seal. It must be shaved off before wearing. Any air leakage gap will allow high concentrations of dust or toxic gases to enter.

Once again, the usage time limit and maintenance management cannot be ignored. Respiratory protective equipment is not permanently effective. The filter cotton or filter cartridge has a clear service life. Once you feel a significant increase in respiratory resistance, smell an odor, or reach the specified usage time, it must be replaced immediately. In humid and high dust environments underground, filter materials are more prone to clogging and failure, and inspection frequency needs to be increased. At the same time, respirators should be stored in a dry and clean dedicated cabinet, avoiding direct sunlight and deformation caused by compression. It is strictly prohibited to mix them with oil stains and chemicals.

Finally, the ability to respond quickly in emergency situations is crucial for saving lives. Every miner must proficiently master the blind wearing skill of the self rescue device, ensuring that they can wear and evacuate within 30 seconds in thick smoke or darkness with obstructed vision. In daily exercises, it is important to overcome panic and develop muscle memory.

Respiratory protection is related to life and cannot tolerate any luck. Only by selecting the right equipment, wearing strict interfaces, replacing them in a timely manner, and being proficient in emergency response, can we truly build a "respiratory safety wall" underground.
